My Heart: A Joshayley Story
CHAPTER 17

JOSH'S POV:
I stared at the ceiling the entire time once I got home. Zac made his way up to my room, sitting down on the floor. "Oh no!" He yelled sarcastically, "Something's wrong."
I looked back with an angry expression.
"But seriously this time, what happened?" He asked.

"Well if you must know," I began, "I think Hayley is mad at me."
"The girlfriend?" He asked. I frowned. "Not exactly."
"Dude, what do you mean not exactly? You haven't asked her out yet?" He seemed to be genuinely concerned, which surprised me.
"What's the big deal about it?" I replied.
"Uh...the big deal is she's totally into you, man. And if you don't ask, you two will slowly will drift apart and maybe just stay friends. I think you don't want to be just friends, Josh."
"Where are you getting all this advice from?"
"Mom's magazines," he replied.
I snickered. "Mom's magazines?"
"Well don't tell me you've never wanted to look into a chick magazine," he said aloud. "But anyways, when are you going to ask her to sing for us?"
"Uh...I think I'm already too late for that."
"What?" He asked, alarmed. "So...so you mean our dreams, our hopes our futures are... gone in the wind?" Zac then grabbed the front of my shirt forcefully, pulling me up. "I don't want to keep doing school my whole life, Josh!" He whined.
I looked at him with disbelief. "Don't tell me you got acting lessons, too."
He calmed himself down, shaking his head at me. "Anyways," I continued, "she's been bugging me all about Jaelyn and her party this Saturday. Hayley really wants to go. But I don't really believe Jaelyn's modified that party just for her."
"What do you mean?" Zac asked.
"She went on today talking about how the party was all re-done for Hayley or something. But I don't trust her one bit."
"I wouldn't, either. She's a s-l-u-t," Zac agreed.
"Exactly. That's why I don't want to go to that party. I think I've made my point clear enough to Hayley but she just won't give in. She seriously wants to get caught up in that scene or something."
"You better go check on her," Zac said. "And go show her you care. Go to the party with her."
"Not gonna happen," I replied, shaking my head. "And...you're kind of sounding like Oprah."
"Yes! I knew I was getting good at this advice thing," Zac congratulated himself--then his face went serious again. "But seriously, Josh. Think about it."
I stared at him with a bewildered expression. "What did you do to my brother?" I asked.
"Very funny," he answered, frowning.

When Saturday came, and I still didn't apologize to Hayley yet, I knew that it was time to. I guess I waited for too long, because once I got to her doorstep around 9:45 PM, her mom answered the door and told me Hayley had already gone to Jaelyn's party.

HAYLEY'S POV:
I walked over to Jaelyn's house alone, in a pretty simple outfit and bold make up. Looking from the outside part of the house, she was incredibly rich. Lights flickered on and off, all colorful. Seniors were draped outside and inside, all arriving in their nice cars. When I opened the door, Jaelyn immediately caught sight of me. "HAYLEY!" She greeted, her voice louder than the music booming through her expensive speakers. "I can't believe you made it!" She yelled over the music. "Yeah..." I replied, almost yelling myself, "I can't believe I did either."
"Well come hang out with us!" She offered. I followed her and sat next to her by a bar-looking part of the house. "Don't worry, the alcohol is all stored up. It's just safe party food," she reassured me, and the simple fact that she really did modify this party took me by total surprise. "I still can't believe you're here."
"Well I am here," I replied plainly.
"Hayley, I'm so sorry if I made you feel uncomfortable or embarrassed in any way at all," Jaelyn said, smiling.
"I guess I'm going to have to forgive you," I said.
"Oh thank you so much! Hey do you want any of the juice we have?" She offered.
"Sure."

She handed me a glass with some red juice in it, or at least, I thought it was juice. It smelled a little funny. "It's a cherry flavor. It's probably the best one we have here."

"Awesome," I said, taking a sip. It was unbelievably good.
"So do you like it?" She asked. I felt drowsy all of a sudden, the juice working in my system. "Yeah, but it's pretty strong."
Jaelyn just smiled. "Hey Hayley...do you want to take a dip?" She asked, her voice booming. "Uh..." I said, my head spinning, the room spinning. I could not comprehend those words she had just said, they did not make sense in my brain. I felt drunk...like I'd pass out in seconds. "I...I guess so."
"Hey Pete! Come here!" Jaelyn called out. Her voice was clear, and then I felt hands on my back, and I was held up. I was too dizzy to feel much, but I was being carried, that I was sure of, and others were laughing. Suddenly I was thrown into the air and in seconds the cold, icy liquid of a pool sparked my body and woke me up. When I finally realized what had happened, I struggled to get back up to the surface.

Once I did, I spit out some water and swam quickly to the edge. There was laughter all around me, and I was dripping wet. Jaelyn came up to me. "Sorry Hayley," she said with her fake voice. She put her arm around me and someone clicked a camera, the flash hurting my drowsy eyes. Jaelyn quickly pulled away, laughing.

I staggered of the backyard and into the darkness, the party's sounds becoming distant now. I couldn't feel my legs move. I tried finding my way home, and I was supposed to be home--but ended up on a bench in an unknown playground. I felt for spare change in my pocket, any money at all, and luckily a wet bill and quarters were stuck inside. I went under the flourescent light and put the change into a payphone. "J..."

"Where are you?" The voice said, alarmed, a complete sense of urgency in his tone. I knew who it was exactly.
"I don't know where I am," I slurred, shivering. I told him the name of the park, surprised that I could still make it out despite my already dulled senses.
"I'll be right there," he replied.

And as expected, Josh came by with a dark blue truck, the headlights coming out from the shadows. "Hayley!" he called, running next to me. He took me in his arms. "You're wet!" He exclaimed.
"Now that we've covered the obvious," I began, "Can we please go home?"

He led me toward his car, fumbling with the seatbelt for me. "I got it!" I said, irritated, shoving the seatbelt and clicking it closed. Josh got into his side of the car and backed out of the playground.
He sighed. "You went to the party, didn't you?"
"I told you I could do things myself," I replied angrily, ignoring his most likely smirking, smug gaze.

"I don't want to say I told you so..."
"Just go ahead and say it."
A smile was forming on the edges of his lips. "Just don't get caught up in that again," he warned. "I still can't believe you actually went alone."
"Well I did," I said, "and it was horrible. I hate her. Purely. And I'll never doubt you again."

We arrived at my house. Josh and I made our way up the porch steps and into the house where my mom sat in front of the television. I looked around and realized my dad wasn't there. Thank God. I rushed upstairs and pulled all my wet clothes off, not listening to my mother calling after me from below. Josh stayed downstairs. I closed the bedroom door, pulled on some new pajamas and dried my wet hair in the bathroom. There was a knock. I pulled the door open and found Josh staring at me. "You gonna be okay?" He asked quietly. "Mm-hmm," I replied, walking into my bedroom.

I laid on my bed and Josh sat at the edge. "Are you still mad at me?"
I sat up and stared at him. "I guess not."
He let out a sigh of relief. "Good," he replied. "Can I ask you something?"
"Sure."
"I should have a long time ago..." he began.
I waited for it, but his silence made me nervous. "Do you want to be in a band?"
My shoulders dropped. "What?" I asked, frustrated.
"I know you're all stoked about the other audition but you have an amazing voice and--"
"I don't know," I replied quickly, turning away from him.
"Wait...why are you mad now? Did you think I was going to ask you something different?"
I frowned immediately. "Yeah, I did."
"Well what is it, then?" He asked.
"You...it doesn't make sense. Josh, are you really into me or are you just playing around? You haven't really taken this seriously. It's like we're just friends. When I know we are so much more than that. You've kissed me too many times and this isn't the way friends treat each other, Josh. Isn't that enough for you to ask me that one easy question you could have a long time ago?"
"Shoot," he replied, realizing this.
"Yeah, shoot. Good word for this right now."
"I'm sorry Hayley."
He was such a mess. How did he not realize this? This really threw me off, and I don't think he realized it was such a big deal to me until now.
"I messed up, didn't I?" he asked softly.
I only nodded.
"Aw, crap Hayley, I'm sorry I didn't ask any sooner."
"Go home," I spit out, rolling my eyes.
"No. I'm going to work this out. And until I do I won't leave this room." Josh reached out for my hands and grabbed them tightly, despite my attempts to pull them away. "Hayley..." he began, breathing in. "will you go out with me? Will you be my girlfriend?"
I rolled my eyes and sighed--but the smile pricking on my lips couldn't be held back for any longer. "Took you long enough."
Josh grinned and kissed me deeply.
